Direct Sow: 5/29/12, planted 5-8 seeds per spot, approx 8-10 inches apart

Broccoli

From seed,
Started inside:
Transplanted: 5/29/12 - approx 8 inches apart

Direct Sow: 5/29/12 - five spots, with 5-10 seeds per are, 8 inches apart.

Tips for next year:
One seed per cell

Melons

From seed, Johnny's (seeds left for all)
Hybrid Red Little Baby Flower Watermelon, 5 cells, 80% germination - planted 18 inches apart
Hybrid Tropical Galia Arava, 5 cells, 80% germination - planted 12 inches apart
Cantaloupe Sweet Granite Muskemlon, 5 cells - planted 12 inches apart
Started inside: 3/30/12
Transplanted: 5/29/12 - difficult to pull apart more than one seedling per cell (dangerous to small roots).

Tips for next year:
Need warmth as seeds and seedlings
Only put two seeds per cell, and pull a seedling out.
Keep damp

Carrot

From seed, Napoli Pelleted, Johnny's (much easier to plant than regular seeds), seeds left
Purple Haze, Johnny's (no seeds left)
Direct Sow: 5/4/12, planted 1 seed every 2 inches in rows.

Tips for next year:
Get pelleted seeds
Keep soil moist during germination

Tomatoes

From seed: Started inside 3/30/12
Cherry Sun Gold (have seeds left), Johnny's
Bellstar slicing/Salsa (seeds left), Johnny's
Amish, High Mowing (1 yr old)
Cherokee Purple, High Mowing (1 yr old)
Cosmonaut, High Mowing (1 yr old)

Still very small plants, but did well as seedlings.
Transplanted: 5/18/12
Planted every 18 inches.

Tips for next year:
Need more warmth as seedlings to grow bigger inside.
Need to start in large pots, not cell type pots
Protect from squirrels digging them up once outside with screens.

Leek

From seed, Bandit Leek, Johnny's
Started inside: 3/4/12, 4 seeds per cell, 5 cells.  Some dried out, needs lots of watering.
Transplanted 5/18/12, approx 6 inch spacing between plants.  Two rows, approx 10 plants each.
Still have seeds left.

Tips for next year:
Plant only 1 or 2 seeds per cell, or plant in large flat without cells.
Start earlier, need warmth, and let them get slightly bigger/stronger before transplanting.
Supposed to dig deep (6 inch) holes/rows to put them in, and continue to hill them up.

Kale

Siberian Kale (High Mowing, 1 yr old)
Red Russian Kale (High Mowing, 1 yr old)
Direct Sow: 5/5/12,  approx 5-8 seeds per hole for bunched plants, planted every 6-8 inches apart.

Had a hard time coming up through the mulch, and lots of the seeds were disturbed by the chickens and squirrels.

Tips for next year:
Clear the mulch to plant

Basil

From seed, Johnny's Genovese
Started inside: 3/30/12, 5 cells with 1 seed per cell.  Nearly 100% germination.
Transplanted: 5/18/12, when had 4 leaves on the plant.  Planted approx 8 inches apart.  Needs good moisture for good production.
Still have some seeds left.

From seed, Johnny's Italian Pelleted
Started inside: 3/30/12, 5 cells, with 1 seed per cell.  Nearly 100% germination.
Transplanted 5/18/12 (see above).
Still have seeds left.

Purchased a 6 cell mix from Jericho Settlers 5/27/12 - slightly larger plants than ours, with a few seed starts per cell.

Tips for next year:
Plant a few seeds per cell, together to get a more "bunched" basil plant, with no need to thin.
Good moisture.

Jalapeno Hot Peppers

Early Chile Jalapeno, Johnny's
Started inside: 3/4/12, 5 cells with 5 seeds per cell.
Moved to a larger pot
Transplanted: 5/18/12, with approx 8-10 inches between plants.  Planted two rows of 5 plants (10 total).  Doing well since transplantation.
Needs warmth to germinate, got at least one plant per cell.
No seeds left.

Sweet/Bell Peppers

Sweet Pimento Lipstick Peppers, Johnny's.
Started inside: 3/4/12, planted 10 cells total with 4 seeds/cell
Transplanted: 5/18/12
Tips for next year:  Less seeds per cell or plant in larger pot
No seeds left.

California Golden and Wonder Red Peppers, High Mowing (1 yr old)
Started inside: 3/4/12
10 cells total with 8-10 seeds per cell (because of age of seeds, low germination).  Need warmth to germinate.
Transplanted: 5/18/12, approx 10-12 inches between plants.  Planted approx 12 plants total and doing well since transplanted.
No seeds left.
Tips for next year:

Celery

From seed, Johnny's Tango celery.
Started inside: 3/4/12
Only started 5 cells of celery, all died except for 1 because they dried out.  Transplanted outside 5/21/12 and seems to be doing well since being put in the ground.

Still have lots of seeds left.

Spinach

Direct sow 5/4/12
Samish Spinach, from High Mowing (1 yr old seeds).
Area got taken over by weeds and grass fairly quickly after it was cleared of mulch and planed.  Can still see some small spinach plants coming up.

Garlic

Direct sow: 5/1/12 (missed the fall plant this year).
Planted from two heads of Garlic that Sophia's dad gave to us.  Planted each clove with "sharp" top facing up, and the small roots down.  Planted 5/1/12 for fall harvest.  Spaced every 4-6 inches.  Two rows of approx 8 cloves each (16 plants total).

Cilantro

From seed, Santo Cilantro, High Mowing (1 yr old).
Direct sow: 5/4/12, planted 1-2 seeds every 4-6 inches.
Lots of weeds in same area and very difficult to weed when plants are small.  Germination rate lower due to seeds being dug up, and also covered by leaves/compost.

From seed, Johnny's Calypso Cilantro
Direct sow: 5/4/12, planted 1-2 seeds every 4-6 inches. No need to thin, plants do well bunched.  Okay to harvest once plants are established.  Will go to seed (corriander) approx 3 months after planting.  Prefers full sun, but cooler weather.
Bolted (2011) in warm weather.  Need to harvest early and often.

Dill

From seed,
Direct sow:

Closely spaced.  Lots of weeds coming up in same area, and impossible to pull them up because dill is so small at first.  Lower germination rate, mostly because of scratching around in soil, and also getting covered by leaves/compost.

Provider Beans

From seed, Johnny's, Snap Bean Bush Provider
Direct Sow: 5/15/12
Good germination (nearly 100%), though the squirrels and chickens dug up quite a few.  Planted every 3-4 inches, and went back to fill in the gaps where they were dug up by chickens or squirrels.  Planted all at once for a single harvest for Dilly Beans.

Snap Peas

From seed, Johnny's Sugar Snap Peas (used less than 1 pack for a trellis the width of the bed)
Direct sow: 5/4/12
Planted at the base of a trellis, with twine running horizontally and spaced every 3-4 inches.  Seeds planted on either side of the twine (double row). Closely planted, q 1/2 to 1 inch, no thinning needed.  Good germination (though the squirrels like to dig them up).  Early crop - does better in cool weather, lower yield in warm weather.

Tips for next year:
Plant earlier
Fall crop?

Onions

From seed:
Walla Walla from High Mowing (1 yr old), and Yellow Cortland from Johnny's (have seeds left).
Started inside: 3/4/12, 6 to 8 seeds per cell.
Decent germination, but tend to dry out and many died from lack of water. Can do in a large, flat bed (not separate cells) and then pull apart.  Pulled apart single plants gently and planted individually every 6 inches.

Purchased 30 onion starts from Jerico Settler's Farm - planted 5/27/12.  Mix of Walla Walla and Storage.  Pulled apart single plants and planted every 6 inches.

Tips for next year:
Water seedlings more
